Walking and talking clears the mind.
Imagine… walking and talking… sometimes walking and being outside can help the words flow more freely.
Walking and exercise can help to untangle the web of complicated thoughts in which we humans have the tendency to get caught up.
Researchers also have found that walking in a peaceful, natural environment can decrease our tendency toward a circular thought pattern, described as brooding.
Dwelling on the negative makes matters worse.
Rumination, brooding, perseverating… on negative or unhelpful thoughts does very little to promote a healthy balanced mood or lifestyle, and it can heighten depression and anxiety.
Our brains are naturally programmed with an innate negativity bias. This might have been useful if we needed to stay out of harm’s way, such as not getting eaten by a saber-toothed tiger. But these days, actual saber-toothed tigers are few.
Yet, our creative minds can continue to conjure up danger at the drop of a hat.
And our negativity bias can make it hard to relegate these thoughts to the background. Because we are fighting our own natural tendency toward self-preservation.
Weird, huh?
Therapy in the outdoors is a great alternative.
Being outside lowers stress hormones. Cool!
So, aside from my love of the outdoors, it’s a good therapeutic strategy to have outdoor sessions!
We can arrange outdoor sessions in advance. Especially during the current public health challenges, such sessions can be a pleasant alternative to inside, face-to-face sessions.
Time to put on your walking shoes!
Let’s walk and talk together. It’s time to clear your mind, purge those negative thoughts, stop the negative waves, and lower the stress.
Come stroll with me!
